I'm am so glad that Obama announced that Al Qaeda has been defeated so we don't have to worry about them (reference many of his campaign speeches), but do you suppose we should be thinking about adding "assault bombs" to the "assault weapons ban" bills currently being debated by our ever vigilant congress.....

I would like to give my condolences to the families of victims of the Boston Marathon bombings today.
I'd also like to extend my sympathy and support to the people of Boston, the State, and of course the USA.
With regrets,
Paul

Done, and I've put this in the military section because we will be providing a military response.

Thanks, Paul, that's very kind of you. At this time (6 pm in Texas) still not much is known other that the toll of casualties.

Why is this in military affaires? Do you know something the media and the US intel community doesn't?

3 dead, 140 injured, 31 of them in a critical condition. It seems that a large number of children are affected too. Two explosions, separated by 12 seconds and about feet. Some more bombs were defused; a fire at a local library was unrelated. The student from Saudi-Arabia is no longer a suspect, it seems he was running away like many other in shock and was injured too. He is in a hospital.
The FBI is investigating into two directions, right-wing extremists and Islamists. It seems that there were no warnings. The type of bomb is very similar to the one used in Atlanta during the Olympic Summer Games, simple back-powder bombs. The dude bombs will help to learn more about the bomb-maker, who seems to be no expert for explosives. The two bombs which exploded seem to be small (less than 10 kg) but heavily spiked with shrapnel. The way the bombs were build and distributed make it possible that this terror attack was planed and executed by one person. Lone wolfs are always the terrorists most difficult to get.
Terrorism is a pest that will stay in our open societies. There are enough lunatics who think that their ideas justify to kill people at random. He have seen many of such tragedies here in Europe too and I feel sorry for all the victims, who were physically or (in much greater quantity) psychologically harmed.

The suspected dude bombs were no bombs, just suspicious things. But under the given circumstances it was clear that the police would better save than sorry and exploded them controlled.
The record stands now at 3 dead, 176 injured or which 17 are still critical.
Nobody claimed responsibility for this attack, even the Taliban told, that while they support attacks on the USA, they were not involved. Contrary to the tendency to claim responcibility for every attack, even when they were not invovled. Seems they expect a massive surge in drone-attacks or even direct SF operations.

From the reports I've read everything is pointing toward a timer-device, not a command detonated one, this might also explain the 12 second gap. The target was the crowd lining the last few hundred yards of the track. This was where the most people were expected at this time, when the normal runners were arriving one by one in the target.

I haven't kept up, but I understand there were no undetonated devices, contrary to what was earlier reported.
