The best formation was the staggered V with either 5 in the V or 10 depending on the size of the lima Zulu ( LZ ) keeping in mind only the gunner was the shooter the crew chief had a gun but was more a danger to himself and the other Huey's than anything else , flight leader always tried to line things up to where he could get the max from his gunners .

The USAAF records show that these bombers expended 12,000 rounds of .50 cal for every plane claimed and awarded. Given a huge number of bombers, and a huge number of 'door gunners', shooting a huge number of bullets, I would bet that the over-claims would also be huge. Adolf Galland once said after surveying some damage to his aircraft that it is his impression that most bullets coming from bombers hitting an aircraft where intended for another aircraft.

This touches on a subject re B17s defending against the German fighters. The USAAF records show that these bombers expended 12,000 rounds of .50 cal for every plane claimed and awarded. Given a huge number of bombers, and a huge number of 'door gunners', shooting a huge number of bullets, ... If you think that these guys were bad shots I've bad news for you....according to official Pentagon numbers, it took 250 000 bullets (three tons of ammunition) to kill one insurgent in Iraq or Afghanistan. The Government Accountability Office (GAO) started an investigation into this number as it suspected that the military was shifting costs between separated budgets to overbook the war-budgets to the advantage of the national-budgets, but it terminated the investigation after checking the logistic documents and combat-reports of involved military units. The only factor that is balancing this number a bit is that these numbers include ammunition used for the occasional in-country exercises too, which were reduced to a minimum as most soldiers see enough real fighting and reduce the load on the logistic-chain. jonathanturley.org/2011/01/10/gao-u-s-has-fired-250000-rounds-for-every-insurgent-killed/or many other links if you like

That's what many people think about it but the person shooting has to use tracers so he would know whether he was high low or side ways an what is the helicopter doing when he sees tracers , evasive action old sport , the two times I was shot down we were on approach and on take off .

That is because there is a LOT of sand between each insurgent.
...and Americans are such lousy shots
