As I recall the situation just before the Yum Kippur war, Egypt had just been re-equipped with the latest model of the Russian tank, along with some SAM missiles and some individual hand held anti-tank missiles. They had a whole new bag of tricks.
A direct attack by the Israelis across the Suez would have been very costly in Israel aircraft with those Russian SAMs sitting there. After a probe or two, they found this out.
They lured the Egyptian air to exceed their SAM defense range, and then nailed them. I believe the SAMs were left to the Israel tanks, which, by the way, were old Shermans mounted with new French guns that outranged those of the Egyptians. I forget the mm, but it was up there.

AFAIK, the Israelis actually crossed the Suez Canal in 1973, and were threatening Cairo.
The story is that they were getting US satellite info about where the Egyptian Army was, and was not.
And I doubt the Israelis were using Shermans in 1973, apart from maybe as medevac and troop carriers perhaps. Even the Centurions were outdated.
Also, another story had the USA sending M60s across the Atlantic, one at a time, in C5s.
