Well the Empire did need someone to turn up half way through to hold our coat and towel.
and clean the blood off our gloves.

Was talking of this very point over a cleansing ale at the RSL many years ago with a bunch of Tobruk vets.
I put the same question and they all agreed that the Italians were "not much chop" and they felt the Italians really did not want to fight for Mussolini.
Most of them ended up in Victorian POW camps, and after the war migrated back to become orchardists and market gardeners in the district. Most prospered.
