Jerry,
Yes, they are, but one is a thumping big thing that stands out like a sore thumb, and the other is a tiny thing in the sky that is quite invisible above 10,000 feet.
Most of our peace loving muslim brothers now occupied with 72 virgins, never knew what was coming.

SJ But the tiny thing can't stay on station for 21 days and takes a lot more fuel to stay airborne even the short time it is able to... The lighter than air ship is not meant as an attack vehicle but as an intelligence gathering vehicle and staying on station for prolonged periods at nearly no operating cost is a definate plus.

I'll try one more time to defend my case. This BLIMP can't be used as anything other than an intel type gathering vehicle because of its' vulnerability to being shot down in a TACTICAL environment. There are much better vehicles that can be used for the same thing - in a TACTICAL (read:battlefield) - situation. Do the math. If this thing loiters at 25,000', how far from the FEBA must it be at a minimum to be safe? And that's only presuming that the FEBA is static and not constantly changing. That of course is a foolish supposition because modern warfare between super powers will be anything but. Can this be used in skirmishes with third country powers who have little or no defenses? Probably, but that's all that I can see in a battle situation.

This BLIMP can't be used as anything other than an intel type gathering vehicle ================================= EXACTLY! That is what it is designed for! ===================================.
If this thing loiters at 25,000', how far from the FEBA must it be at a minimum to be safe? =================================== Don't know. Probably is a function of the enemy's capabilities and the capabilities of the intell gathering equipment on board (radio, photo, infra red, radar, audio - all have differing effective ranges) ================================== Can this be used in skirmishes with third country powers who have little or no defenses? Probably, but that's all that I can see in a battle situation =================================== And that, I think, is what they are looking at with the possibility of continent wide mass formations a thing of the past. No superpower, or mini-superpower currently has the will, or resources to start a war -- it's the little rogues that will be causing the problems - Syria, Iran, Egypt, etc.

What can the floating whale do that a spy satellite can’t and do it more efficiently? Also the satellite has a staying time over target in excess of 21 days. It seems to me that the Army just wants to get into the game with their new toys.

Radio, at 20,000 feet would have a range of 200 mi.

Jerry, The "brown shoe" part of you is showing! Ground commanders have had control of various UAVs for years. Denny

But UAVs don't have the staytime and satellites are not under the ground commanders control....

UAVs can, and commonly have been when needed, overlapped both in time and territory. While not DIRECTLY under the control of the on ground commander, satellites respond to tasking from them through a national source.

Why don't we just agree to disagree? This thread is getting boring, quite frankly.

To Jerry and everyone else, There is no boss here, and I'll tell you the REAL reason why. It's not because I'm a communist (which I'm not) or because I'm a nice guy (which I hope I am). I'm not the boss because, if we don't all manage this forum, people will leave and pretty soon, Sir John and I will be the only ones playing with each other. As you know, starting a forum is ridiculously easy. There needs to be some minimal hierarchy, so Jerry and I will just manage things, while one other deals with the software. But we must still ensure no one leaves. In that regard, you all should speak your minds at this thread so we know where we want to go.
