That's no big deal, since the public has known for years. But I didn't know Australia has a secret area, called Pine Gap, which does research on drone strikes.

I've understood Pine Gap to be a major listening post, but did not know that research was done there as well. That is interesting. Which government does it? The Australian or the American?

SJ, me, and Mr. Google are the only ones who know about Pine Gap and we're not talking!

Area 51 is not the only classified site in the US. Of course, I can't say any more. What is interesting in the referenced article is the Photo of the sign warning that "Photographing this area is prohibited"

Pine Gap gives away the secret there are no Pines at Pine Gap . If there were pines at Pine Gap, there wouldn't be a gap of pines.

But...but... if there were NO pines how could there be a gap? If there were Oaks or Maples you couldn't really call it Pine Gap. But I guess you could if you wanted to. Kinda like there are no pines left in Pine Bluff, Arkansas - and Jim Thorpe never visited Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania - and you can get to Mars, Pennsylvania without a space ship - and I won't comment on Intercourse or Blue Ball, Pennsylvania.... [Ed. Note - these are all real names - look it up]

It is a "Joint Space Facility' (US and Australia) and has I believe about 10 levels of tunnels etc under it. Lord knows where they put all the dirt! It can pick up telemetry from launches just about anywhere and from this they can tell launch site and target.
All this is well known now, even the baddies know it, but back in the '70s it sent the socialists MAD!
Another one is 'North West Cape' at the most western point of Australia. It is a VLF communications base for USN submarines in the Indian ocean. Both would be near the top of a target list I expect.

USAF cargo and passenger jets fly in and out of Pine Gap on a daily basis and bypass Australian immigration and customs transferring US citizens and their families and bringing in supplies.
In recent times agreement in principle has been reached here to allow US military to use various military bases for all three services. I read somewhere recently that Manus Island Papua New Guinea was a WW2 base and at one stage had over 800 ships at anchor, and that there could be a reopening of that base which also has a large operating airfield.
I believe that there is much more to US-OZ relations than we average guys realise, military and related issues of course but also having enormous minerals and energy reserves and being in Asia Pacific makes this country very important for the US

Much the same thing happened to Sen. Barry Goldwater (1964 Presidential candidate of the Republicans)at Wright Patterson air base in Ohio.

I can pretty guarantee you that would never happen if our president wanted entry into any place in the US.
