Did a bit of reading, and the Gallipoli vet is Staff Sgt Long.
It does not say but I think he was in the 2nd AIF , not a member of the famed 39th (militia) Battalion.

The "fuzzy wuzzies" worked in team of 8, 4 carrying and the other 4 resting, to bring the wounded back to medical help. There is a story about of one independent bloke that did not want to use 8 blokes to get him back. He had two wounded legs, and he did the entire ~90 kms on his bum (ass)!
Mac had no bloody idea of the terrain of the Owen Stanley Range, and never saw any of it from his hotel/dugout in Port Moresby. All talk and no action that bloke.
