Could the U.S. have won the Vietnam War yes of course it could .. did as a matter of fact at the end of '68 tet but it was not meant to be so it became a body count war the units with the highest amount of enemy kills would be rewarded in different ways .. they could be brought in from the bush for 3 days of hot showers plenty of beer visits to the 'ho houses and other ways ..

The US won the battles but lost the war. The problem was not to maximize body counts but rather to destroy the enemy's will to fight, and that meant destroying their infrastructure and, if necessary, political apparatus.

If they were bombed back to the stone age, they could not have fought on.

You forget the American media!
North Vietnam's most powerful weapon.

Yeah the media didn't help but it really didn't matter the U.S. as a whole were tired of it and after the big fight moral was not good with the troops discipline started slipping fragging became a popular sport by '73-'74 there was virtual collapse .. nobody wanted to be the last to die in that shit hole ..

I think it was General Giap that observed that all it would take to defeat America was to send home lots of flag draped coffins.
The media did the rest! And as another wise man said, "The Vietnam War was lost in the living rooms of America".

The Linebacker bombing campaigns, as we now know, nearly destroyed North Vietnam's ability to fight, and, if it had gone round the clock, as happened in WWII, the war would have been won.

Doubt it, China would not accept a united Vietnam, allied with the USA on her doorstep.

Buffer states are not useless, just like North Korea is a buffer state for China.

Mainly because the USA is not game to try it, as they are not certain of what China would do in response.
