'ELDO' - European Launcher Development Organisation was a later development following on from the UK nuclear testing in the 'outback' at Woomera in Sth Australia in the 1950s to 1970s.
Add to all that was a spy base with the US at Nurrungar and another at Island Lagoon, a salt flat with a small mountain that looked just like as island in the middle of all the salt. Those places were involved in the US Apollo program.
Been to most of all that except for the still secret stuff, and the town of Woomera is still maintained in usable condition at a moments notice I believe. Population is down to a few dozen from the few 1000s back in the olden days, and a very interesting outdoor museum of many of the rockets and jet aircraft used back then. The UK 'Stand Off Missiles' used by the "V Bombers" were tested and developed there.
