To the best of my knowledge this story is true.
Text processing was very very difficult for the earliest text processing progams -- because it turned out that it is not possible to reliably process text without at least a rudimentary understanding of its meaning, contents, semantics.
Mistakes by early hyphenation algorithms are particularly infamous in computer science.
I was told that there was there a hyphenation algorithm which was given the English noun PSYCHOTHERAPIST -- and the result was
psycho-the-rapist
