Is anyone here interested in martial arts? I do Wing Chun (Bruce Lee's first form) and Arnis. (I'm rated as a "Master" in Arnis de Caballes -- sticks and knives). I used to to Aikido but it got to be too hard on my old body; it made me the world's largest consumer of Motrin. I'm currently involved in teaching knife defenses to some active duty U.S. Recon Marines, and to some future Marines who are getting ready for boot camp. As some may know, the USMC's martial arts program was substantially revised a few years ago.

AH! Another Beach volleyball fan! SJ Since an unnamed participant in the other forum hasn't joined in yet, I feel for this one time I must take his place. You do remember who won in beach volleyball in the Olympics, don't you (females I mean, I don't have a clue about the males!)? Do you suppose he would say that only Americans are good enough to win and that if not for us there would be no beach volleyball, and .....etc., etc. etc.?

I used to do Tae Kwon Do, and I have a perfect fighting record - I've lost every match I was in.
To get to a more serious discussion about martial arts, I have done TKD, as I said, but I think the sport is due for a reform. In this day and age, if they want to talk about fighting arts, they should focus on how to use a pistol and rifle; furthermore, they should no longer waste time on pretentious patterns but focus on physical conditioning - just as they do in the Marines.

Hi Stanley. I remember that you did Tae Kwon Do. But I didn't know about your sterling record. Keep it up! I agree with you streamlined approach. I when I was practicing knife fighting in the Philippines in June I asked a Navy Seal friend to join in. He said he just shoots people. That's practical. I wish I had a license to kill. Here in the States, i hear a lot of complaints about the seemingly unlimited kata that must be learned in karate. Wing Chun has no kata. It has just three forms ("ideas" really) plus a simply foot form, a knife form, a long pole form, and a wooden dummy form. But it is based on concepts not forms. It has no sequences. Any part of any of the forms can be performed in any order. The point is to give a 13 year old girl the power to kill someone in seconds. I learned a little Kae Kwon Do from my form house mate, Capt. Mike Kong, of the Korean Army. He taught martial arts to ROC troops in Saigon for about 10 years and was someone to fear. In fact, ROC troops are all to be feared.

I would go with Bruce Lee, who said that a punch was just a punch and a kick was just a kick. IOW, keep your fighting ability simple.
Are Korean troops that fearsome? Even compared to the Marines?

Oh Yeah! I saw a Korean put a Marine down in less than a second in a "pleasure house" in Saigon, back in the day....
