A lot of conjecture about Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor , where were the American Carriers ? , why would Japan attack knowing that the carriers were not at Pearl Harbor , I mean Japan had to know the carries were not present Hawaii was full of Jap spies .

Was it really luck or maybe something else , one or more carriers were delivering planes to midway another to Wake . Why wern't the Nipponese notified by their spys in Hawaii that the carriers were not at Pearl Harbor .

As everyone knew that an attack was immanent there was a crackdown on Japanese spies in Hawaii, with some success. The last spy-operation, the mini-sub off the port entrance of Pearl Harbor, failed as the sub was sunk. When the combined fleet learned that the carriers were not in port they had no other choice than execute the strike and try to sink at least the battleships (back then still believed to be the more important weapon system) as due to the starting attacks elsewhere they never would get the chance to attack Pearl Harbor again.
