The author,Timothy Garton Ash, is a professor of European studies at Oxford U, and he says that Germany is not big enough to be a hegemon in Europe. Well, it is. As his fellow professor, Michael Howard, noted, without the US, in both world wars, Germany would have overwhelmed all the other countries and become master of Europe - even Britain, eventually, would have had to bow to Germany or be occupied. What stopped that, in both instances, was the intervention of the United States of America. And, even now, the US military is keeping the peace in Europe.

Here, in Europe, the Deutsche have the reputation of being efficient, organized, and rather intelligent. My colleague with the Nokia Electronics R&D said that the German electric equipment are the best ones that any Europeans make. The BRD are the largest economy in the E.U. though in the 20th century twice devastated by wars. The German cars, the Volkswagen and the Audi are very reputable in Europe. But, the corona virus seems to have damaged the European population much worse than their politicians will admit in the public.
