>And that is the easy part of the queer tax law, besides having to pay more to the feds (but less to the state of CA).<
I would suggest you need a professional tax consultant. You are allowed a greater deduction (if you add them both up) if you do your federal taxes as individuals.
For instance (here we pick figures out of the air) if an individual is allowed a $5,000 deduction, and the married family is allowed an $8,000 deduction. Individually you two would, in this case, get a $10,000 deduction if you file separately, whereas as a family you would get only an $8,000 deduction.

You must have learned that "retarded son" thing from your mother, from her own experience with such. ;D

I would suggest you need a professional tax consultant. You are allowed a greater deduction (if you add them both up) if you do your federal taxes as individuals. That depends on the situation. When there's a large difference in incomes, as with Tom & me, it's better to be married tax wise, for both state and fed taxes.
I know, I have to do mine both ways. I see the difference every year. I don't need a tax consultant when I have to do it both ways anyway, single and married, every year.

Why Don, with your liberal bent, I would expect you to be happy paying more taxes! After all, Joe Bidden has said that it is the patriotic thing to do....

Heres the way I'm starting to feel about taxes , there are not enough taxes being paid , so should Don pay more and get nothing or should he pay less and get nothing , this is a puzzeling question.

Justice Anthony Kennedy:
“There are some 40,000 children in California...that live with same-sex parents, and they want their parents to have full recognition and full status. The voice of those children is important in this case, don’t you think?”
Is the Constitution to be interpreted by the wants of 40,000 children or eight children in black robes?

As I have explained before, I don't mind taxes, but I mind how the money is spent, espcally when outside of the USA.
IMAO, the biggest waste of money with how our military is used. Think of the billions of dollars lost in Vietnam for nothing. And Iraq Two, just to force democracy on a country where the majority (wanna have a vote there to prove it? ;D) hates the idea.
I strongly support wars that make some sense, such as Iraq One, to help our friends in Kuwait. Or WW2. Or even stopping the terrorist training and such in Afghanistan / Pakistan (and espcally with blowing the head off OBL).
And I ain't liberal or conservative. I just go for what makes sense for this so-called free country.
Do my views on gun control seem liberal?
Do my views on illegal immigration seem liberal (which is to match the laws of the country they came from)?
I have taken politcal tests on the internet, they all show me around the middle, which I agree with. A bit left, as would be expected, if they ask too many questions about gays or same-sex marriage. I believe in equality, which seems to be my "left" side.
Super-conservatives never care about anybody but themselves and the god of their superstitious beliefs (like that Sanatorium idiot) and turning this country into a Christan theocracy.
I am proud not not be considered a super-conservative. I am also proud to not be considered a super liberal as I have heard countless stupid ideas on that extreme as well.

Make that nine children in black robes. That might make more sense than the 9 OF's in there now. At least the kids will have to live the longest with the decisions they make.
IMAO, the max age should be around 55. Then force them out, replacing them with somebody younger.
And IMO, every one should be considered a moderate and not at all influnaced by religious nonsense.
The countless 5-4 decisions from the SCOTUS proves to me that something is wrong. Nine children could do better than that!
