Was opium ever legal in the USA in the gold rush era?

The reason I asked was that many years ago, I read a VERY large leather bound, bank account ledger. About 25" high, 18" wide, and 4" thick.
It had an account that read something like 'Ah Fong and Company' in Bendigo, at the centre of the Victorian Gold Fields of the late 1860s.
The account had many credit entries of "Sale of Opium" - CREDIT 10 pounds or 20 pounds or whatever. These entries were almost daily.
Not possible now of course. But I will bet they were sales by a Chinese to a Chinese.

For some reason they resent the word CHINAMAN. Don't know why. We have Englishmen and Frenchmen and there is no resentment.
