It sure was a PITA to drive into Berlin before the wall came down, though.

I'd agree with Churchill and shake hands with the Soviets as far east as possible. If we had reached Berlin first, we would have liberated a lot of Eastern Europeans.

I know, but, if we had gotten to Berlin, we would have gotten a good bit of the eastern portion of Germany, and we may even have gotten a good bit of Hungary and what was then Czechoslovakia, not to mention the Balkans.

No, the lines were already drawn. Stalin wanted Berlin. Poland and Hungary were not much developed, mostly agriculture and with strong domestic support for communism, so they weren't high on the agenda of the UK and USA.

Eisenhower stopped at the Elbe to save 200,000 American and British/Canadian lives. Why pay that price to hand the city over to the Russians?
I would guess that the Germans would have surrendered wholesale to the Americans etc, but fought like tigers against the Russians.
And a zillion German women would not have been raped!

It was just a cakewalk after the Bulge, so we should have sped right onto Berlin, as well as Prague, Budapest, and, if possible, Warsaw.
