I love security studies, so I enjoy discussion war even in the midst of one.
Anyway, if Putin decides to engage the rest of the world, he will be bringing Russia into a second Cold War. The problem, for him, is that his country has always been outmatched, because the alliance against him is, in effect, most of the world. And the other problem is that subsequent wars will magnify the effects of the previous one.
So, for example, the Punic Wars between Carthage and Rome led to Rome's increasing power and Carthage's decreasing influence, until Carthage was destroyed; the two world wars led to the rise of Russia/Soviet Union and the US, and the decline of Germany, until Germany was divided into two. Closer to home, the War of 1812, between the US and Britain, magnified the effects of the Revolutionary War, leading to the increase in American power and that acceptance by Britain - which would, eventually, lead to a grand alliance.
Any thoughts on this? One day, after my career, I must engage in a study of human conflicts.
