From my armchair, I'm not necessarily against it, because my experience with education in general is that the bureaucracy tends to impose a lot of unnecessary requirements. That said, the military has to instill discipline and conformity, so that, in time of war, people will die so others may live.

That have to reduce the requirements when they do not get enough people to join. All this can be avoided with a draft.

Won't happen in Canada during peacetime - we enjoy the good life too much.
