Gettysburg , what was the purpose of this engagement ? . it was a no win on any given day that climaxed on the 3rd day .

As I understand it, they came to Pennsylvania, primarily looking for supplies and not for some grand strategic reason....

Yes that was the primary goal and that goal had been accomplished , but Lee was looking for a fight he sent Ewell toward Harrisburg after that maybe Baltimore Lee could have withdrawn to Virgina any time he choose .

I understood they went to Harrisburg looking for shoes. I don't think Harrisburg had anything else to offer (still doesn't )

Jerry Ewell went Harrisburg to burn down the Railroad bridge over the Susquehanna river , Heth went to Gettysburg to get shoes , neither got what they set out for and neither did what they were suppose t do .

The American Soldier in 1863 was no different than the American soldier today he could think also he could see a loser when he see's one and many could see there was no hope of success in Pickett's advance many simply turned around and went back to their lines , but combat units have their share of crazies who want nothing more than to brain an enemy these were the ones that went into the Yankee positions .
