Actually, there was a great 'debate' between the OZ PM and Churchill.
PM Curtin said bring the 9th home, and FDR had to agree to send an extra US Division (36th, I think) to make up for the loss. Then after the glorious victory at el Alamein, the 9th came home anyway.
My FIL in the 7th came home in the SS New Amsterdam, and had a big rush of jungle training in FNQ before heading north to New Guinea. NIL home leave!! Most of the 7th Div never saw home or family in 6 years.
Most had an extra couple of kids, all talking in Yank accents.

Funny you should say that.
Each of our battalions had a unique 'colour patch'. Usually rectangular, square, oval, or triangular. Usually 2 colours with a border of a third.
One of my FILs mates, over a quiet ale, said that his Battalion was "white over brown on a sandy background" and that "the brown natives got whiter every day".
