Winnie got caught by the Americans playing footsie with Stalin over the split up of the Balkans when the war was over , by this time the Americans were weary of the Empire and Winnie as well .

Winnie had no choice - as much as he wanted to save Poland, his army wasn't as close to Warsaw as the Red Army.

Britain did NOT go to war to 'save' Poland!
It went to war, with the greatest possible reluctance, to try to stop a bloodthirsty tyrant and dictator.
It went to war for a principle!

Britain was between the rock and hard place and was reaching out and grasping straws they had no bargaining chip except for the Yanks and the Yanks were tired of the Empire and Churchill .
