Ike had no intention of spending 250,000 of "our boys" taking Berlin.
Let the Russians do the dying.

I would agree with Churchill about shaking hands with the Russians as far east as possible.

..and pay all those lives for 100 miles?
as it panned out, it would not have changed the equation of the Cold War. The Berlin Airlift maybe.

That other bloke broke through the German lines, while Monty was stuck, as he usually was. And Monty actually had the nerve to talk about a thin line approach to take Berlin, when he was a plodder, and Market-Garden would show he was not that sort of general. I totally agree. Had Ike given Bradley and Patton the go ahead instead of Market Garden the collapse of Germany could have come much quicker. With the Russians banging away at the Germans and with a sweep by Patton would have put the Germans in an impossible position. Beyond that it could have also saved a number of European nations from being invaded by the Soviets and made unwilling members of the 'Soviet Bloc'.

Here's a thought for the thoughtful , Ike was very much aware that Bradley could not stand Patton and the two would not have worked well together .
