I would give my extra home away free before I would rent it out. I've known many people who tried to rent. Seems 90% are disasters for the owners, especially here in CA where all the laws protect the renter.

Rental housing is nothing but headaches. Of course, it all depends on who you rent to. However, I have heard of renting to best friends who became big enemies over the renting. The main problem seems to be when you're renting, you're usually dealing with somebody who doesn't qualify to buy for some reason. I also know a Christian guy who rented an extra home to a guy he knew very well from his church. That turned into a big disaster too, and that only took two months. The worse person you can rent to in CA is one who well understands CA law when it comes to renting. And many scumbags take advantage of it and rent for free for many months. BTW, I remember many years ago, there was a lawsuit here in CA when a lawyer tried to rent an apartment and the landlord simply said "we don't rent to lawyers". Of course, it went to court and the lawyer LOST! I wonder what Swampy thinks of that! -Don-

The human rights code provides various grounds of discrimination, but being a lawyer is not a prohibited ground. IOW, you can discriminate against lawyers, but not against African-Americans.

The court figured that being a lawyer was too big of an advantage to the renter, and could even cause more problems by explaining the legal rights to other renters. One lawyer as a renter could put an apartment complex out of business in CA, because there are ways to avoid paying the rent with the landlord powerless to kick out the renters. But I hear in NV, it's much easier to kick out renters. -Don- SSF, CA

How is NV these days anyway? I hear it really suffered in the financial crisis.

How is NV these days anyway? I hear it really suffered in the financial crisis. I could not care less about it as I have no plans to sale regardless of price or worth. But I think there is a slow recovery in the Reno area, not so much in the Las Vegas area. There are not many houses now for sale in the Reno area, but the one right next to mine is now up for sale. One thing I have noticed, they are now keeping the asking price a secret until the realtor is called. It used to be right on the info. sheets in front of homes for sale (seven to ten years ago) , but not any more. So I have no idea what the asking price is these days because I don't really care enough to call to find out. -Don- SSF, CA

I wonder how much it would complicate things if they had no African-American as renters and then an African-American lawyer shows up wanting to rent. Or change above to a Chinese lawyer. ;D -Don-
