Your term "Liberal" is the exact opposite to ours.
Over here, (Under here?) a "Liberal" is a conservative, what you would call a Republican. The Australian Labor Party (American spelling) is the socialist/communist (Democrat) side of politics.

Australian Liberal Party and their coalition partners National Party of Australia are closest to the US Republicans in political terms, former Liberal prime minister of Australia, John Howard, was a close friend of POTUS Bush and one of Howard's sons worked at the White House for a couple of years, he is a lawyer.

Be aware, this election will be a cliff-hanger! I wont argue, maybe you are right, however in my opinion there will be a landslide defeat for the Labor government. Their campaign came off the rails mid last week and that started the train wreck. But a week is a long time in politics. Latest poll shows that Abbott has pulled ahead of Rudd as preferred leader.
