Will the Corps say “Good Bye” to PCSing? September 10, 2012, in PCS, Spouse & Family News by Amy Bushatz
The idea of living at one duty station for more than three years makes me feel antsy. So I’m feeling pretty good right now about being Army instead of Marine Corps.
The Marine Corps is considering a policy change that would allow Marines and their families to stay stationed at one base for long periods of time, according to this story. Known as “homesteading,” the move would give Marines the opportunity to stay in one location as long as the needs of the Corps were still met.
“I do think there are probably benefits to longer tours in some locations,” Gen. Jim Amos, Marine Corps commandant said in the story. “Not wholesale, but I think we can save some money with that.”
He clarified that Marines would still have to move after promotions or for the service’s many schools.Read more: spousebuzz.com/blog/2012/09/will-the-corps-say-good-bye-to-pcsing.html#ixzz26BcRJI3m SpouseBUZZ.com
I agree with the author of this piece. One of the bene's of military life, as I see it, is the chance to move around this earth and experience new things. If I hadn't spent my time in the Army, I would never have seen Germany, Ethiopia, France, Italy, Spain, Greece, Morocco, Turkey, Iran, India, Thailand, or Vietnam. [nor would I have ever met the girls who live there] What say you?

Three years in any one spot was always my staying duration. After that I got the itch for more adventure elsewhere.( and a new batch of girls)
Shucks, Jerry, you missed sunny Alaska with all the native girls on the beaches. Denny can tell you all about it.

Yep - there were a lot of the States that I messed. Spent a lot of time overseas, though... Let's see,,, I served in Colorado, Georgia (short time), Northern Virginia, Kansas (short time again), North Carolina, Maryland, and here in PA. Still have a lot to see....but Alaska is not at the top of the list. It and Hawaii are just too far away....

Oh yeah, Shemya was a blast. I really enjoyed my five years that I spent there in one year. FWIW, the Brits used to (and probably still do) homebase with one regiment (or unit etc) and they all rotate to different places together.
