Big Mac was arrogant true a chip off the old block you might say as his dad was most arrogant , to my knowledge the were the only father and son team to be awarded the MOH , I don't know if Big Mac was aware of where OZ was until he got there or cared were it was , he and Nimitz were at odds over most everything an they matched arrogance against arrogance , Nimitz did a lot of Island hoping he wasn't equipped to start campaigns that was why there is an Army , If I had been the boss at Tarawa there would have been a lot of court marshals , but the Navy / Marines managed take an absolute cluster fuck and make it heroic , Admiral King took a lot of heat over that one , people wanted to know why so many casualties over an Island that was less than a square mile .

I think Mac was more interested in the White House than a bunker in Melbourne.

Yes Big Mac did keep the Democrats on edge when he made remarks about the White House , Big Mac was a power in the republican party which is why he got away with what he did , but above all Big Mac was a legend in his own mind .

Did Mac have any hope of dislodging Truman in '48, did he even try to get the '48 nomination? or of winning the GOP nomination in 1952?

I can remember the sacking by Truman, it was a sensation over here as I am sure it was in the US.
It said a lot about Truman's backbone, as did the Berlin Airlift etc. You should dig him up and stick him back in the White House!

Truman put up with a lot from Big Mac , but drew the line with nuking China , Big Mac considered this to be insubordination and went public with it , this pissed Truman off .

But when ALL things are considered Japan found out it was a good idea to lose the war to the U.S. they have never been better off . This something OZ should consider , enlist all their immigrants then declare war on the U.S. , problem solved .
