This is wonderful, not just for farmers outside Japan but also for Japanese consumers. Quite honestly, much of that land should be freed up so Japan's residents can have more living space.

Swampy the new Australian government while in opposition were working on a plan that would convert vast empty land in northern Australia stretching from the west coast to the east into a food bowl. An area approximately the same as Europe is available, good land just add water. The wet season up there spans 3-4 months on average of very high rainfall, the rivers would have barrages installed, small dams that allow a reasonable water flow to continue to the ocean but hold enough for irrigation and general water supplies.
In Western Australia the Ord River Scheme for agriculture is successfully exporting to Asia Pacific and will be expanded as part of the project. The economic advantages are many and the need for food is growing in Asia Pacific where nations have too little land to feed growing populations.
Following Prime Minister Abbott's recent visit to Indonesia there was an agreement to again cooperate to combat illegal immigration however increased trade was high on the list (Australia-New Zealand trade is greater than with Indonesia), live cattle export business shut down by the previous socialist government and restarted with greatly reduced quotas will now be increased immediately and agreement was also reached for Indonesia to invest as partners in cattle stations in Australia.
No doubt Japan, with whom Australia has an excellent relationship, is looking towards an Australia food supply too.

Swampy you would not be surprised to read that China is already investing in farmland here and joint agricultural ventures. Foreign investment has always been important, UK, Canada, USA, Japan are some of the nations with Australian investments by their citizens. The northern food bowl is exciting however to date the largely left leaning media here are remaining silent, they cannot bring themselves to acknowledge that conservative ideas and plans are good.
