Yes proximity fuses are still in use today , in Vietnam a cannon 7 miles away could fire a shell that would explode 75 ft in the air , by proximity fuse .

No usually HE ( high explosive ),air bursts were used in wooded area when the shell exploded in trees tops so you had wood and steel fragments flying around .The Army did have the BEE HIVE round when fired it would throw out hundreds of steel flachets is you will or steel razor blades , this round was used to break up attacks .
