Vietnam was a body count war , any one that does not understand that will never understand the Vietnam war , territory was never a consideration other than kill the people within in that territory , it was not a war of maneuver it was a war of blunt instruments , the Americans became very , very , good at killing the opposition and the opposition was not faint of heart their motto was if you want us come and get us , they were smart and tough, why one wants too talk about invasions , armor and all sorts of conventional doings forget about it.

It's not just a war to kill the enemy but also to destroy their ability to fight. The NVA were willing to accept horrendous losses to meet their goals, but they would not have been able to meet their goals if, as I've said many times, their supplies had gone up in smoke and if their military personnel were wiped out.

Afghan war is also a body count war , how many of the enemy have been killed ? outside of Bin Laden it seems to be some kind of secret , as far as battles go they have bigger battles in Chicago every weekend , its already been admitted that if the U.S. was to pull out the regime in Kabul would collapse .
The NVA didn't need a supply line the whole bloody Country was their supply line , GIAP said all he needed was 8 tons of munitions a day to keep the ball moving , food would be found in the nearest rice paddy .

Why did you not establish a 'front line', and an occupied zone that could be gradually expanded in steps from south to north?
