It was an ambush; armed policemen wouldn't have had a chance either. In the UK, the police is still respected as person unlike in the USA where the police has to hide behind big guns all the time.

Apparently not respected by everyone..... Don't really think US policemen actually HIDE behind their guns. That is a very provocative statement. Do German policemen hide behind their guns?

In the USA the police officers immediatly draw their gun, even when just taking the data of somebody who was speeding.
German police officers don't use their weapons very often. Last data I have (2006) are 90 incidents involving persons, 57 were warning shoots, 6 aimed against things (e.g. getaway cars) and 27 aimed aginst persons of which 4 were killed.

You need to visit the states to find out what you are talking about next time. Your first paragraph is pure BS.

Whilst in Yuma AZ in 2000, I was talking to a cop and the subject got around to firearms and the recent 'confiscation' of them in Australia.
I asked of the situation in the US and he took me out to his car.
He has his sidearm on his belt, and he showed me his pump action shogun leaning against the front seat. Then to the 'boot' where he had an M16, and a deer rifle with a scope THIS big!!!
After I got over the shock I asked about "what do the baddies have"? His reply, "Oh, the baddies outgun us".

Maybe "hide" is the wrong word, but from my own experience, reports in the media and impressions of German police-officers who had participated recently in an exchange program between Germany and USA the US police always tries to over-power any possible danger by guns, mass or both. Maybe it is a circle that the bad boys in the US don't respect the police so the police try to restore this respect, but it doesn't look favorable IMO. Overreacting looks always a bit weak to me. Maybe there are strong characters out there who get respect without guns, but that is not my current picture of the US police.

Matthias,
I believe it is a part of the American attitude to warfare, in any of its forms.
"victory through superior FIREPOWER"
Which is a lesson they seem to have forgotten in recent wars, or at least the 'legal handcuffs' have done so.

PS,
"and 27 aimed aginst persons of which 4 were killed."
Sounds like lousy shooting to me!

Mathias, I fear you are getting your information from Hollywood movies or Network TV. US cops do NOT pull their guns first, and they definately do not shoot at getaway cars. It is illegal for an officer to use a gun to stop someone from fleeing - a gun can be used ONLY to protect life - not to stop a criminal from getting away. I don't have statitics available but am friendly with a number of police officers, and provided counselling to a number before I retired. I would like to compare the number of German officer shots versus the total population of Germany and the number of US officer shots versus the total population of the US.
