On Thursday afternoon I was given a demonstration of a young stallion trained to completely trust humans, his trainer is a Farrier by trade and has many years of experience catching wild Horses (Brumbies) and training them. After an assistant used a plastic bag on a pole to try and spook the Horse by waving the bag in his face, touching various parts of his body and rubbing it over and under him the trainer produced a chain saw with the blade protected by a cover. He lay it on the ground and walked the Horse over it a few times and then with the Horse not on a lead rope he started the chain saw and with it idling passed it between the Horses legs, placed it on his back and on top of his head and then increased the revs and did it all again.
The Horse hardly flinched. Then the trainer placed the start cord in the Horses mouth and pulled the chain saw away causing it to start, the Horse seemed to enjoy the trick and when it was switched off and laid on the ground he tried to grip the cord by himself as we watched.
It demonstrated that Horses can be taught to trust people and not be easily frightened, a very important ability for Horses often used to trail ride in mountains and sometimes on narrow tracks hundreds of feet above a valley.
I have watched Horses being trained but had never observed the chain saw trick before.
