The killing on the ground in VN was always very close usually within 30 meters or closer , which is why the AR-15 came into service , the maximum effective range of the AR-15 on a very good day with no obstructions in the way was about 300 meters but up close an personal it was a killer it could put out 20 rounds in less time than it takes to say it .

AFAIK, most fully automatic rifle/SMG/LMG/MMG will put out roughly 600 rounds a minute. 10 rounds a second.
Should be enough for your average peace lover.

The enemy had the edge with his AK-47 fired the bigger bullet 762.39 it also had a 30 round magazine this assualt rifle was coveted by the American Soldier though at the same time it was a burden because of ammo supply . in my unit you could carry what ever personal arm you wanted so I had the M-60 and a 9mm CZ pistol in my pocket .

You know, during the Battle of Ia Drang, the platoon that was cut off was only 100 metres from the main force. I have been wanting to ask why that is such a stretch in jungle combat. Perhaps Hornet or Jerry can explain it to me.

Ia Drang Valley was panic on a grand scale , a battalion of 1st Cav. =1000 men were dropped directly into a zone occupied by a Regiment of the enemy = 3000 men so there was complete chaos many of the Cav. units Company level on down were cut off from each other , the Cav. had Air and Artillery support but they couldn't be used because the enemy kept very close contact , it was a bad two days for the Cav.
