Everyone is hoping it will herald the country's emergence from a decades-long slump, and I hope it will too. But Japan is already aging, and by 2020, when Tokyo hosts the Olympics, one in four residents will be 65 or older. So the country can only hope to stabilize as a comfortable country, where most people can enjoy a reasonable standard of living, but it can never attain the glories it did in the 1970's and 1980's. And the same will happen to China.
