Percy surrendered to spare the civilians of Singapore or something like that , the man was a fool but the Empire was full of Percy's , Percy outnumbered the Japs 3-1 , the day before the surrender Percy and Blimp were at the club and over a pink gin decided that the thing to do was surrender I mean the Japanese were civilized weren't they and it would be just a minor set back .

Few Australians care too much about Percival.
It is Maj Gen Bennett that should have been at Sandakan,

Hence a good argument for fighting to the death - if you're going to die anyway, you might as well take them with you.

Singapore anyway you look at it its difficult to understand why Percy felt the need to surrender , he out numbered the enemy 3-1 , there was enough supplies to maintain his Army for a month or more , the Japanese did have air superiority but their Army was short on everything else , who knows ? .

The Japanese pulled a bluff - if the British had held on another day, the enemy would have to retreat across the Johore Straits.

"there was enough supplies to maintain his Army for a month or more ,"
The only water they had came through a pipe from the mainland across the causeway, and the japs cut that on the first day.

Then why didn't he go back over the causeway and fix the leak ? he had plenty of people on hand to do it , the 8th OZ could have done it themselves , better than building rail roads for the Japanese , one can only wonder what Patton , Rommel ,or Lee would have done , not Monty though .

Not sure where the water came from, a river in Malaya I suppose. By turning the tap OFF it made no difference. We were stuffed.

America had its own debacle in the Philippines and the numbers were greater .
