How old would a soldier be to become a colonel? That would vary based on needs of the service, attrition and size of the forces, but when I retired as an LTC I was 42, so I'd guess one could make Col by about 45 give or take... It does depend a lot on what the needs are - when I made 1Lt it was standard 18 months, during Vietnam, the normal time to 1Lt was 12 months.
