I've been thinking about this for a long time.
After the landings in Normandy, the Allies landed in the south of France in the operation known as Dragoon, and they were unopposed. The Germans were expecting an attack from the English Channel, which is why they fortified the norther coastline, particularly Pas De Calais. And that is why the Allies should have landed first in the south of France, and then, after the Germans come down to meet them, land in Normandy unopposed.
And I read that Lidell Hart proposed an alternate landing from the Atlantic side, which was also unfortified.
