Over the top really didn't apply in Vietnam there weren't any trenches but the idea was probably the same , what did the troops do while waiting to go over the top pretty much the same for a couple thousand years , check their weapons , have a bite to eat , take a nap , b/s with each other , newbies would be nervous , old timers who had went over the top too many times would start getting the jitters , Officers and NCO'S would be watchful for potential problems in the ranks , the same thing through the eon's .

I think I have related this incident before, but I asked one of my great uncles that had been through this in France.
"What was it like the first time you went over the top"?
He said, "I was terrified", and I can but wonder what I would have done, probably shat myself. Those German 'Maxims' must have been a horrible thought. Another Great uncle actually took on one of those, and won the MM.

Nothing wrong with being terrified most people would be and the enemy be waiting for you . many times approaching a hot Lima Zulu ( landing zone ) I'd chamber a round and think damn !!! .
