I don't understand, why didn't they go after the dog's owner? They did, but the judge presumably thought there was a conflict between the owner and the dog, so each had to get a separate lawyer.

This almost sounds like a joke. -Don- SSF, CA It is funny, but the owner could put the blame on the dog and claim innocence, while the dog could claim the owner was partly to blame and so should pay part of the damages suffered by the injured party. ;D

Only in the US can this happen. I know of several cases where a pit bull bit somebody. It was always the owner, not the dog, that had to defend himself. Here in CA, if your dog bites somebody, it immediately gets the death penalty without a trial, which only leaves the owner to go after. BTW, what can the dog say in a GA court to defend itself? Just "woof!"? -Don-

A dog cannot speak for itself, but its lawyer can represent it and perhaps plead the insanity defense.
The US Supreme Court ruled that trees have no standing (right to appear in court), so I'm wondering if dogs can have standing.
