Thanks for the URL, Swampy. Now I can again access my favorite forum. A review of past events follows: The Kidney stone was successfully broken up by LASAR last Wednesday and I was sent home to recover. Things went well for a couple of hours and then the pain started again so I hit the Percocet. This kept it under control until last Wednesday when I was scheduled to have the stent removed. Removal was a piece of cake - didn;t even know it was out until the Doc showed it to me. Wen home feeling fine for a couple of hours - then the pain hit again - doubled up on the Percocet to no avail. Back the the ER and a shot of happy juice. Home in about an hour and able to keep the pain under control with the Percocet. Doc says this is all pretty normal and I should be pain free in a couple of days. The big problem is that my computer got hit by the "FBI Virus" - a mean mother that totally locks up the computer. A restart just restart the virus which takes over all controls and fills the screen with a warning that I have violated some sections of the US criminal code and my comp-uter will be unlocked only if I send $200.00 to he address listed. The guy at the shop[ says he will have to completely wipe my computer and start all over from scratch. In the process I loose all the applications that I added after buying the computer which is everything of value on the machine. After I get it back it will be a ling term job of reconstructing things the way I had them, In the meantime, I'm on the lap top which keyboard I am not familiar with - so forgive the typos. Now that Swampy has given me the URL I'll be able to visit daily again. Good to be back.

I guess that a piss poor excuse for your piss poor typing is better than none at all. Glad you're back, someone needs to rein in Swampy.

The big problem is that the entire business accounts are on the computer. I was able to do an 'emergency' pay role for the last pay day but if I can;t get things back up by next payday, it will be a real mess. I'll be able to pay th guys but the income tax withholding will be a real mess and take forever to straighten out....

Better do it right this time and get a decent firewall/security software and regular backups to external decives, because you might lose a harddrive also to a head crash when the harddrive gets older.

Talking about software---Microsoft just came out with Windowd 8, and it does not sound all that good:
NEW YORK (AP) — On Friday, Microsoft Corp. released a new version of its Windows operating system, one designed to bring the desktop and laptop experience to tablet computers. There are several ways to get it — or avoid it.
Windows 8 represents the software company's effort to address the growing popularity of smartphones and tablet computers, namely the iPad.
The new software is a radical departure from previous versions of Windows. It may take people time to get used to the changes. The familiar start menu on the lower left corner is gone, and people will have to swipe the edges of the screen to access various settings. There will be a new screen filled with a colorful array of tiles, each leading to a different application, task or collection of files.
Windows 8 is designed especially for touch screens, though it will work with the mouse and keyboard shortcuts, too.
There are several versions of Windows 8:
— Windows 8.
Like its predecessors, Windows 8 will run on computers with processing chips made by Intel Corp. or Advanced Micro Devices Inc. There's a basic version designed for consumers and a Pro version for more tech-savvy users and businesses. The Pro version has such features as encryption and group account management. Large companies with volume-licensing deals with Microsoft will want Windows 8 Enterprise, which has additional tools for information-technology staff to manage machines.

Honestly, if you are not App-adict better ignore Windows 8, the technology progress is too small to warant the efforts of an update, even if it comes for a very small price. I'm testing Windows 8 since a couple of months but saw nothing that made me think it is a product I should use.

Jerry, it may be possible to find the problem if you were to get out of the Windows environment and go back to Disk Operating System, DOS. Once there you could look at the DIRECTORY and hunt for any program that does not quite look right, then delete it. If I recall that would be C:/dir It has been 20 years since I used DOS.
Another way would be to call on an expert to clean the computer. Here is an Indian outfit that is associated with Microsoft. 888 203 6992
They charge around $100, but you get free service 24/7 for a year.

I gave up trying myself and took the machine in to the shop. Got a call this morning asking me for some passwords, so I can assume they are working on putting it back together after cleaning it. I asked them to install a good anit-virus software. I assumed that I had one before but obviously not good enough.

Some time ago I got caught by the same culprit. Believe he is Russian. I was using the XP OS and was able to use a partition to separate Windows from my financial data. This saved all my important data. The partition I was using does not seem to work with Win 7, so that suggestion of an external storage device is well worth looking into.
Also you can have your firewall set to a higher setting.

Sill don't have the machine back, so I don't know what they have been able to save yet. I am expecting, however, a long time at trying to rebuild my computer so that it acts like it did in the past - years of tweeking was required initially....
