Henry Kissinger's latest book - which could be his last because he's 91 years old - talks of how we need a new world order, which should be based on a balance of power between the states and their cooperation. Well, he tried that with detente and realpolitik during the 1970's, and it didn't work, and it's not going to work now. In the first place, the US is far and above the other powers, having a larger GNP than China and Russia COMBINED. In the second, the world is very different from the 18th and 19th centuries, because economics is far more important, never mind technology and, above all, domestic politics. I haven't read the book, but he probably would not deal with the aging societies in Russia and the rest of the world, which would mean that, within a decade at the most, they would NOT be able to engage in foreign adventures. And that, if nothing else, would mean they would not count as much in his new world order.
