For multiple reasons, I wanted to send this here.
I'm a member of the ISPE, the International Society for Philosophical
Enquiry, they are a Mensa like organization for individuals over the
99.9% percentile of the intelligence quotient distribution, that is,
IQ > 172 in the Cattell & Cattell test, or equivalent.
Because of this high IQ requirement, they are in practise, not as
stupid as the Mensa
See www.thethousand.com/.
They run an www meeting for members, which is
the1000.ning.com/. There is there a group entitled The Book
Shelf, for books that members have read. I posted the following
in that group.
------------------------------------------------------------
Kurt Vonnegut: Mother Night. Novel.
(Finnish translation: Äiti Yö.)
Vonnegut is Jewish, he became a POW in the WWII, and saw the German
town of Dresden drown in a veritable sea of flames. Vonnegut has his
own personal style of writing, which is simultaneously realistic and
absurd, and it is political and wittily critical, and is very
entertaining.
The novel tells the story of Howard Campbell, who was and was not a
Nazi; he was and was not an American traitor; and he did and did not
work for Joseph Göbbels.
Howard Campbell was an American spy in the WWII, an intelligence
operative. So evidently he was serving the OSS, the predecessor of
the US CIA, even though Vonnegut does not write about that aspect.
Intel agents are among the grandest heroes of the political history,
even though their governments will not recognize them; they will not
get flashy medals or big public honors or sizable salaries; and their
names and careers will remain secrets.
I wrote in one of my short stories that one of the biggest
prerogatives in the human life is that a person can be personally
happy with himself/herself and his/her own life. Intel people do
enjoy that right.
(BTW see the book "CIA" by Tim Weiner.)
Indeed, one US military person whom I knew once mailed to me an
American military poem entitled THE INVISIBLE MEDAL.
