Of interest to the more mature of us here, I just received a communique from the Office of Social Security informing me that we have been granted a 1.7% increase due to the rise of the cost of living as determined by our benevolent government. However, Paragraph 2 informs me that the cost of my Medicare premiums have also gone up. Applying advanced math to the situation, we discover that the 1.7% COLA increase, minus the Medicare increase results in a gigantic $10.00 per month increase in my "take home pay". Seems that the majority of the increase in cost of living was in my Medicare benefits, and everything else that I need to live increased by a very small amount. Wonder if I could get the genius that figured that out to do my grocery shopping for me next year?

The way my health and health-related expenses have been going the past few years, I've been getting away with it like a striped-ass ape!

I think I need to clarify my original post as, upon reading it, it sounded like i was complaining about an increase in Medicare premiums. Not really. My recent healthcare expenses are so high that the modest increase in premiums is a drop in the bucket. And I fully agree that if I can afford to pay a bit more for healthcare, I should. The system is in financial trouble (as is most of the government these days) and I don't mind paying "my fair share". What actually burns my butt is the way it is done - give me a raise and then take it all back -- like the gov't is looking out for me - taking care of me -- The announcemet of a 1.7% increase seems like a sham 'cause it ain't going to the recipient....

Jerry,
Nowadays if you are standing still you are doing well, most are not.
