I remember reading a essay on the USAAF heavy bombers crews in England. The gunners often 'snuck' in an extra box or three of ammo, so much so that the payload of the aircraft was effected and safety compromised.

Bomber Gunners had one minute of sustained fire about 800 rounds of .50 caliber ammo .

Would a couple of boxes of ammo really have made that much difference? Especially when you consider the tonnage of bombs that were being dropped?

The B17 had about 6 gunners and could only take 4000lbs of bombs to Berlin.
Six gunners taking 200 lbs or more of extra ammo means an extra 1200 lbs of weight! No real idea on the amount that 100 rounds of .50 is but they are heavy.
....and the DH 'Mosquito' could take the same bomb load to Berlin with 2 engines, 2 crew, and do the mission twice a night. AND come back on only ONE engine if needed.

I was given target replacement duty at an Australian Army rifle range when 12 M60s were being fired, the noise was incredible standing behind the buttress looking up at the targets.
