As you may infer from the title, I don't think so - you can't say one pilot is better than any other, because everyone is so different. That said, I first learned about him from the movie, "The Right Stuff", which solidified my love of aviation and the aerospace industry, and I like Sam Shepard's portrayal of Colonel Yeager.

Thanks, but he never flew the X-1 test aircraft. BTW, he holds the record for flying more planes than anyone else, and Yeager does not come close. That's why I say you can't compare apples with oranges. To me, the ultimate is flying the SR-71.

I have no doubt whatsoever that Eric Brown would have flown the X1 just as efficiently as Yeager.
He knew a bit about test flying new aircraft!
Seen the X1 in the Smithsonian.

SJ But he didn't, which is why you can't really compare. Yeager could also have flown every aircraft, if circumstances had permitted, but he didn't.

Maybe, but the claim or suggestion of BEST is invalid!

Yeager was a brave and dedicated pilot, but his WW2 record is about average or a bit less for all US Pilots.
The US had many 100s of 'Aces'. He was far from the best of WW2.
What he did in that X1 that day was to fly an 'aircraft' straight and level until the fuel ran out, and he glided to the strip from there. Brave maybe, but that does NOT make him the best!
RIP Richard Bong!

I liked how, according to the link, he rained on the Navy parade - just as they were celebrating one of their pilot's achievements, he beat that pilot's record.
