Our drones are getting the Taliban leadership, but we've lost one of our own. While on a mission to rescue an American doctor held hostage, a member of the US Navy Seals was killed. We can't keep taking such losses.

Those of us who volunteered knew what the possibilities were when we signed up. He was doing what he loved and what he trained for. What better way could a man die than fighting for his country?

Jerry,
I have long felt that the entire Vietnam conflict was a 'test' of the mettle or back-bone of all involved, in particular America and her friends. Much as Korea was also.
It was the height of the cold war, and the war was a direct attempt to take over by force an ally of the west. The west could of course just tut-tutted and stayed on the sidelines, or it could back up the ally with blood and treasure.
It chose the latter.
Once it took that decision it was a matter of the mettle of the west to spend that blood and treasure to show it had what it takes to meet communist aggression.
Unfortunately, she was beaten by 2 enemies, the one in Vietnam, and the one in 'the living rooms of America', and we all know that story. Maybe actually a third enemy, herself. She fought the war on her enemies terms not her own. She seemed to forget how to win a war which is ONE way only and that is to kill and cripple the enemy until they beg for surrender. There is NO nice and bloodless way to 'win' a war. There is no way that civilians, mothers and babies escape harm.
The west is still fighting war like that today.
