The Huey gunships and the C-47 known as Puff were the most widely used in Vietnam the night time picture of Puff putting out 9000 rounds a minute and remember tracers were every fifth round .

Yea being crazy was one of the two major requirements for a door gunner the other being able to walk an chew gum at the same time.

Question,
Barrel heating, how did door gunners counteract this problem? And for that matter, how did "Puff"?

Puffs barrels rotated which kept them from over heating also they usually fired in ten second burst they could fire longer but there was a limit on how much ammo they could carry Puff also function as a flare ship , with the M-60 you fired in six to ten round burst you had to be very careful of this if you over heated the gun a shell would expand in the chamber making the gun inoperative this could have serious consequences the very least would get your ass booted out of the unit .

'bout as quick as you can think it burst pause burst pause remember the rate of fire for M0-60 is 600 rounds per minute 60 seconds in a minute do the math .

If the gunner is pausing only 1 - 2 seconds between each burst then the heat will accumulate!
Bren gunners could do a barrel change in a matter of maybe 10 seconds or less. and that is with a 28 round magazine which could be changed in about 5 seconds.

A bren gunner fires from a stationary platform a huey gunner is constant motion the approach the landing the take off total time start to finish less than a minute you don't have the liberty of changing barrels . That painting is a picture of my platoon 2nd flight of the 116th ahc (assault helicopter company) showing us coming into a hot LZ it was run 'n gun if you stayed in that LZ more than 20 seconds your life expectancy went to zero and you did this shit all day long .
