The Greatest Army ever. Fielded was Run almost entirely by Non commission officers the Roman Army , Centurions and Tributes both came up through the Ranks there were officers but they weren't required to do anything which they did well .

How do you know? I'd still say the greatest army would be the US Marines.

There's the old story of the American who was visiting a British Regiment and spent the day with the Sergeant Major, following him around as he inspected the day's training. NCOs were, seemingly, directing everything - teaching classes, demonstrating techniques, critiquing outcomes, organizing activities, etc. At the end of the day, the American asked the Sergeant Major, "It seems that your NCOs do much of everything. What do your officers do?" The Sergeant Major replied, "They show us how to die with dignity and bravery..."

The US Marines are NOT an Army they are a part of the US Navy .
