The Tupolev is in pieces now, and several of the crew have been killed. Russia and the other former republics of the former SU have very poor aviation safety records, so this may be no surprise. I wonder what the cause is.

From the meager number of facts avaiable, it could be pilot error, brake failure or slipery surface on the runway. The breaking apart is not significant, as most airplanes in a similar situation would break apart. Airplanes are really rather fragile machines....

Russian aviation has to operate under much more challenging conditions than most western aviation as they have to operate from sub-standard airfields somewhere in nowhere, with very mixed volumes of passengers and cargo and reduced maintenance possibilities. For that, they do a good job.

True, but they operate bigger airplanes, which make the news. Interessting in this case, it is the second plane of this carrier who had breaking problems within a few days. This might be a deeper technical issue of this carrier. avherald.com/h?article=45ad34b5&opt=0

Their BIG mistake is putting Russian pilots in Russian planes.
