Soldiers salute because that is the tradition from the earliest times. But researchers have discovered that is actually a mistranslation - soldiers in the days of horses and castles did not "salute"; they "sarod".
A sarod is a musical instrument from India, so, the next time you see a superior officer, do not raise your hand smartly to your forehead; take out your sarod and start strumming a lullaby.
