Is this a reasonable caution or is Big Brother going a bit overboard?A former Marine involuntarily detained for psychiatric evaluation for posting strident anti-government messages on Facebook has received an outpouring of support from people who say authorities are trampling on his First Amendment rights. Brandon J. Raub, 26, has been in custody since FBI, Secret Service agents and police in Virginia's Chesterfield County questioned him Thursday evening about what they said were ominous posts talking about a coming revolution. In one message earlier this month according to authorities, Raub wrote: "Sharpen my axe; I'm here to sever heads." Police -- acting under a state law that allows emergency, temporary psychiatric commitments upon the recommendation of a mental health professional -- took Raub to the John Randolph Medical Center in Hopewell. He was not charged with any crime. Read more: www.foxnews.com/us/2012/08/20/outcry-after-military-veteran-detained-for-anti-government-facebook-posts/#ixzz24BnINOyz

jerryfmcompushaft: some months ago, the White House announced that it was very interested in gaining some control over Facebook to meet its ends. Unfortunately, I did not retain the source of this information, so I cannot share it with everyone here. But, in the interest of self-preservation, anyone that uses Facebook should be extremely cautious of what they say. The Obama administration stated that the purpose of gaining control of Facebook was to track worldwide terrorists; in the case you mentioned here, we can see that their goal is working, however innocent the perpetrator's motives were, in this instance. I have been warning everyone I know about the administration's purpose, stated or otherwise...LOOSE LIPS SINK SHIPS.

I can't imagine ANY US government administration admitting publically that they want to "control" Facebook or anything else in the public domain. That immediately beings to mind Nazi Germany and I'm reasonably sure they don't want even a trace of that to enter into the American public's mind. There may have been a mention of how they can access and monitor Facebook - which also scares me - but we know they already do that. That is part of their due diligence in maintaining public safety.

I wish that I had kept the source of the info that I provided; it would be helpful; I do remember quite clearly the stated intent and purpose. It's all about 'tracking international and domestic terrorists'; it's all about shutting up a citizen's right to speech. Glad to have read your take on this, kylenedenny.

"Tracking international and domestic terrorists" is quite different from "controlling" social media. As I said before, I'd be very disappointed if the government wasn't monitoring ALL forms of communications in order to help protect us. Controlling is another issue, however. The former has nothing to do with our freedom of speech. The latter has EVERYTHING to do with our freedom and way of life.
